The Lake Fairfax Park, VA day occured on Saturday, October 3, 2020. This one was supposed to be between 3.5 and 4 miles. However, we got lost a few times and it ended up only being about 2.5 miles.

The mornings of our hikes have gotten colder lately. It was 43 degrees when I got up, in the 50's when we started this one and then in the 60's by the
time that we finished our hike at Lake Fairfax Park in Reston, VA. There were four of us on this trip: myself, Tom O.Brien, Mary Gordon and Jessica Lowry. This group is becoming 'The Regular Crew'.

We left Prince of Peace UMC around 8:00 AM and didn't make it to the park until about 9:15. When we started this hike we immediately had problems finding the trail. That was a bad omen. When we got to the north side of the lake we had a decision to make: stay straight on the gravel road or take the trail close to the lake. We took the trail close to the lake. The trail that we chose had a lot of roots on it and became very hard to follow at one point. At that point it looked more like an animal path. But Tom led the way and got us back to the gravel road.

Next we got to a bridge and had another decision to make. We decided to turn left. We should have gone straight. We ended up on the wrong side of the campground. But we kept going. There were a few runners and cyclists on the trail, but not that many.

I wanted to get us down to the southernmost border of the park and then go northeast. But the map was not that great, there were no blazes on the trees and the occasional sign with a map on it did not always have a 'You Are Here' point on it. So we were not sure where we were.

At one point we crossed a road and saw a kiosk and a bridge to the left. Since we were not sure where we were we decided to turn left and cross the bridge. That was a wrong decision. By doing so we probably shorted this hike by a half to one mile.

So we hiked some trail, came to a road and followed it back to our vehicles. We estimated that we probably only did about 2.5 miles. I felt bad as I probably should have re-conned this one again as I had only hiked portions of this series of trails in the past. I'm going to try and RV camp here this winter and hike some of these trails again. So when we hike at Lake Fairfax Park next time, we won't get lost.
